In recent times journalism as a profession has experienced remarkable changes especially in the content and format. There have been hallmark changes in the relationship between a news source and its audience. In the past, a news affair would be likened to a lecture where emphasis would be on the newscaster with the audience having little or no participation in the process. Then if a listener or a viewer wanted to react to or criticise a program or a publication they would have to do so via a letter, which was the only available avenue and it would reach its destination weeks later.Nowadays however, watching news is like a conversation,a viewer can chip in at any moment and be part of the process.During last weeks episode of Larry Madowo's #Sidebar,a viewer blasted Danstan Omari,a panelist on the show.Via Twitter , he wondered why Danstan had a problem with Raila Odinga referring to some politicians as 'vifaranga' while he was comfortable referring to others as 'hawks'.That caught everyone on the show flat-footed then they exploded into laughter. After dominating the mainstream media for a longtime, the end of an era for radio came in 1940 with the beginning of television.TV revolutionised the way people learnt about emerging trends. Before, people had been used to learning yesterday's news today. The day president Roosevelt died,TV had its viewers updated on that day helping TV gain popularity rapidly. The quick story updates by TV has resulted into slow newspaper turnover as readership continues dwindling day by day.Radio has decided to remain relevant by focusing on in depth analysis and human interest content.Journalism today is dynamic.Televised journalism includes making its programs spliced into videos that are then linked to websites like youtube, facebook, twitter $ personal sites. They also make sure to integrate multimedia components e.g videos, links, photos to almost every story. There are several factors that have changed the activities in a newsroom, they include; ⚫The internet ⚫Cheap and highly advanced cameras and camcorders ⚫Free personal blogging and publishing programs ⚫Cell phone technology ⚫Email ⚫Smartphones ⚫Global internet connectivity via wifi and satellite networks All these factors are contributing to shaping the future of this profession.Multimedia storytelling experience is now richer than anything imaginable in the past.News outlets such as BBC,Reuters,AFP,Squawka,CNN now offer up-to-the-minute news updates about anything and anywhere in the world.Online news sites are taking the place of magazine services as electronics become more affordable and more complex with each coming day. Before, it was said that a pen is mightier than a sword, now, what can you say about a microphone,a camcorder and a laptop in a wifi-hotspot?You can now learn photography from world-renowned professionals via youtube and upgrade your game.Smartphone photography is becoming the in thing so long you know the principles like composition and framing. One can also learn from the best apps available.Mobile journalism (mojo) is being used across radio, television, print and online media. All these media use mojo in similar ways but the emphasis is what varies. It is also possible to make a documentary using mobile tools like smartphones and DSLRs.For media and journalism students, having the right skills when you graduate are pivotal to securing your first job as a reporter. If you are already in the industry, then upskilling and learning new digital skills will greatly improve your career opportunities and potential. It will make you more independent and a confident storyteller.
To say every business needs a Facebook presence today would be a blatant understatement .Being the reigning champion of social media with 6.8M Kenyans visiting the site every month, 3.5 M returning every day and 97% visiting daily. Facebook is a powerful marketing tool, it's a great space to keep customers informed, develop brand identity and broaden your reach. It turns passive customers into active fans who follow news of promotions and developments and share it among their friends. It works extremely well with food, electronics, home goods, restaurant and so much more. Here are points to guide you on facebook marketing. 1.Making Most of Your Facebook Business Page. Choose a great cover photo for your page, choose a category, have a customized URL, select your target audience and add a call to action offerings and services. It includes sharing links, images, and pages on a customizable page. This is where you need to be easy, you can loosen your tie a bit, don't be afraid to be funny .Always consider what your audience would like to see. A nice mix of humor, educational resource is ideal to make your brand noticeable. 2.Hosting Facebook Contests Exclusive Talk /Workshop. Contests ,sweepstakes or promotions ensure brand awareness. You will be required to use third party apps for creating your facebook contest ,then direct users to the app from your facebook page. There are plenty paid tools to help you like shortstack and pagemodo. 3. Facebook Ads. Things to think to about before doing Ads. 🔸 Objective. Choose a campaign objective based on your marketing goals for example ; Boost posts ,promote your page, send people to your website, increase your conversions on website ,Get installs for your app, reach people near your business, etc. 🔸 Target audience. • Custom audience is from customer list and is made of existing customers for your business. • Core audience is a targeting option that allows advertisers to reach precise audiences based on location ,demographic, interests and behaviors. • Lookalike audience is away to reach new people who are likely to be interested in your business because they are similar to your best existing customers. 🔸 Ad formats. There are various formats for example carousel ,video , photos and canvas. Don’t use low resolution pixilated pictures and videos. For video , craft your content as if it will play silently . 🔸 Measure your work. Measuring your work will help you to improve your future work . This will help you to know; • How many people were reached. • How many impressions were served. • What was the click through rate. • What was the cost per acquisition ,click ,impression etc • Who saw your Ads • Which Ad placement performed best. There are types of Facebook ads that show a user's interactions, such as facebook like to their users' friends. This method seems to capitalize on the "word of mouth" marketing concept. If a user sees that 3 of his friends like a certain page, he/she is more inclined to pay attention. The goal is to have a user take the same action as their friend. Make your Ads Short and sweet to catch your customer’s attention faster .Analysis also show that sponsored stories are 46% more effective than regular facebook ads. 4.Facebook Exchange (FBX). Facebook lets advertisers take advantage of ad retargeting on facebook through real time bidding. When a user visits a product page on a retailers website but fail to make a purchase the retailer can then display an ad for that same product on facebook with FBX.FBX was earlier relegated to only side columns but it has been recently allowed on News Feed. On News Feed, response rates are 10-50 times higher than on side columns. 5.Facebook Open Graph. Open graph lets businesses label a user's action with their app. Apart from the usual like, comment and share, open graph allows users to listen, taste and read. Spotify is a great example of how facebook open graph becomes a powerful marketing tool. This process begins right from logging in, once permission has been obtained, spotify is able to stream what songs a user is listening to from a friends News Feed. Users can like, listen or star it as a favorite on spotify. Open graph posts are more meaningful to users because they are being generated by a familiar friend removing the emphasis on established brands. As we always say, be social on social media, it isn't a soap box. Be ready to commit to being personal, talk about your know and your experiences and have some fun with it. Hopefully, this gave you some ideas about how to use facebook to market your brand/business in 2017. Always remember: 🔸Your goals +your audience + text + visuals =engaging content 🔸Determine your audience 🔸Focus on quality, composition and consistency in your visuals 🔸use video and other creative tools

In addition it enables you Understand who your target audience is so you can attract new customers and why your business is unique for them. Let's take a look at examples of successful content marketing campaigns in 2017 . 1. Telecomminication company Safaricom needs no introduction since it has been around for the longest time. The giant firm with deep pockets employs digital content marketing with an aim to lure new customers and retaining old ones.Airtel launched Tubonge campaign that promised their customers cheaper call rates and plenty internet bundles while Telkom came wooing with Amkia bundles and free whatsapp. To counter competition Safaricom entered the telcos war with Tunukiwa daily. This campaign was aimed at rewarding customers depending on their use of airtime. Not long after launching Tunukiwa,Safaricom surprised us with Twaweza.Twaweza was specifically a campaign to encourage innovativeness and to celebrate the Kenyan spirit.Twaweza has found a home on billboards and TV screens with the main act being the evergreen comedian Mogaka of KBCs Vitimbi show. 2. Fresh chewing gum has also joined the list of brands using digital content marketing.Fresh gum employs humour that effectively sparks emotion. The brand has been consistent with adverts coming and going on our screens. The adverts are kept short but effort is made to make sure to drive the message home. You have probably came across one on you tube. 3. Jumia Kenya is a fast rising online shopping platform. This brand has invested in quality videos, fun adverts and proper graphics. They always strive to give their potential customers fresh content that is relevant,up to date and engaging.Jumia make it easier for potential buyers as they include price tags on their products and as if that is not enough, the product is always a phonecall away. 4 . Tusker launched their Jenga game/Twende game campaign to help local football and rugby clubs get grassroot support. The campaign targeted revelers in the country's ever active nightlife. For every bottle of beer a customer purchased Ksh.2 would be donated to the club of the customer's choice. The process was easy to learn as it was similar to Cocacola's Shinda Mamili where you are required to send a given code to a particular number.Football clubs among them Tusker Fc,Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards participated and were handed their cheques in a ceremony held recently. 5. Trust condoms profits had taken a dip before they introduced the Kuwa True campaign. This campaign has gotten a good reception on twitter targeting youths in Nairobi Clubs on weekends . The brand was losing the price war with a new entrant into the market, Salama crossing over from Tanzania.Despite Salama not incurring any advertising costs, they were still winning .The Trust brand hired Bruce Newton, the gifted dancer who gained fame as a dancer on the Sakata show to do their adverts targeting youths for obvious reasons. 6. Into the banking sector now, lets take the case of Unbank youself with CBA Loop. This campaign from Commercial Bank of Africa was designed to make mobile banking appealing to millennials . It required an interested consumer to download the android app onto their smartphones.Thousands of youth got hooked and signed up for this account since it proved easy to use, banking from the comfort of your couch as they said. 7. Broadways bread has been around for ages, say 70s or 80s if it is true that they have been in the market since my parents rocked Afro hairstyle that is on my mums ID.Broadways have succeeded in keeping their old customers who must be over forty now and a majority struggling with diabetes which explains why they prefer the low sugar bread.Their adverts seem to target those who have advanced in age. 8. KCB also came up with Simba points,a campaign jeered towards increasing sales. The bank's statement to the media that surfaced online said that it was rewarding customers for simply banking with them.Once a customer has achieved a targeted number of points,he/she can redeem them for a variety of things from KCB parners. They include travels across the world with more than 100 airlines, visits to the best hotels, electronics from Hotpoint and so much more.
'Taste the feeling' is the captivating tagline the Coca-Cola soft drink is currently riding high with. The world‘s top beverage brand is one of the most aggressive in product promotion. A day hardly goes without a coke advert on your local screens. Last year though, coke was forced to stop airing their advertisement on TV during the watershed period. Kenya Film Classification Board through its vocal chairman, Mr. Mutua argued that the advert that had teenagers kissing was not suitable since it goes against our culture. Coca-Cola will be turning 125 this year and I decided to take you on a trip down memory lane. The headquarters of the Coca-Cola company are located in Atlanta in Georgia in the US of A. In Columbus in the same state, a doctor named John Stith Pemberton is credited with the invention of the soft drink in 1886. Mr. Pemberton had been unsuccessful in his career as a doctor. All the medicines he had tried to come up with did not reach the required standards and were therefore popular. That is when he decided to try something new. His knowledge of chemistry lead him to create a soft drink syrup that is now used to make the world famous coca-cola. He however died in 1889 but Asa Griggs Candler came to the rescue of the company. Mr.Candler worked on the popularisation of coke by coming up with offers like buy one get one free. His idea was to get people to like it then buy it later. Under Asa‘s reign, the company grew in leaps and bounds. The company produces the soft drink syrup that is later sold to bottlers all over the world. How the syrup is made is one of the world‘s most guarded secrets. During the second world war, a trade embargo was placed on the Coca-Cola syrup importation in Nazi Germany. The head of Coca-Cola Germany, Max Keith, had to come up with a brilliant idea to save the company‘s face.In 1941 the company unveiled Fanta Orange that was made using lemon, fruit twist, mango and passion fruit. Fanta was widely accepted among the Germans. In 1960, coke acquired Minute Maid and added the acquisition of Sprite in 1961. In 1969 coke came up with Simba, a brand for Africa that had the lion as its logo. However the brand was short lived in the market and was soon phased out. In 1964,Martin Luther King Junior-the famous black rights crusader-won the Nobel Peace Prize.Luther King came from Atalanta just like coke.Racism was so bad in Southern America those days that no company owned by a white would congratulate or recognize him. However the then chairman of coke, held a meeting where he declared that it would very embarrassing if coke was not going to recognize MLK Junior. The next thing the company surprised the Americans with a big party to celebrate Martin‘s big fete. Coca-Cola has also been involved in non-food market. In 1982 it acquired Columbia Pictures, a film studio for $692 Million. During the time it owned Columbia, movies like Ghostbusters, Stripes and Karate Kid were released. The big Japanese Technology firm SONY later bought the film studio from coke in 1989 for $3Bn. Coca-Cola was caught up in controversy in 2009 when the deal to purchase Chinese Huiyuan Juice Company went sour. The Chinese government through its commerce ministry blocked the deal that was worth $2.4Bn. The government feared that Coca-Cola would become a monopoly in the soft drink industry besides making Chinese fruit farmers to get low payment. Among coke‘s corporate social responsibilities include the sponsorship of the American Idol talent search show from 2002 to 2014. The company was also the official title sponsor of the 2004/2005 season of the English Premier League. In 2010, Coca-Cola sponsored the soccer world cup held in South Africa. According to the company‘s 2005 Annual Report, they had dominated the world‘s beverage market having 78% of the total beverage consumption.Coca-Cola topped the annual grocery sales in the UK becoming the first brand to do so. Coca-Cola swept all the world regions except in the Middle East where people prefer tea and coffee. Amatil Bottlers in Australia was its best bottler raking in 1 Billion sterling pounds. In 2010 it did not come as a surprise when coke was named the number one global brand.
Constantly changing customer preferences creates a number of challenges for marketers and in 2017 it's not going to get any easier. Ad blockers, a decline in popularity of traditional media, and more sophisticated tastes from audiences require effective measures - aggressive enough to beat the competitors, and subtle enough to avoid excessive advertising that can put a customer off. Influencer Marketing offers unique access to the right kind of audience through targeted exposure. Unlike radio or television, where people are likely to switch channels or leave the room when adverts are on, influencer marketing is capable of retaining an audience’s attention from start to finish. Audiences are either unaware of being targeted or accept it as something that matches their following and personal preferences. Interestingly, over 40 % online customers use ad blockers, giving brands and businesses even more reason to put their cash behind influencers instead. Influencers are the ones holding everyone’s attention. They are the ones people actually spend time watching. And as long as all eyes are on them, more and more brands are going to see value in paying these people to represent their products. When influencers are used effectively, they create natural ways to seduce a target audience. This Marketing tool gives brands the opportunity to create word-of-mouth buzz through influencers whom consumers already follow and admire. Content Marketing is merged with influencer marketing and it serve as the cornerstone to nearly any marketing plan and works for all types of brands because everyone uses it differently,It is an ongoing process that's best integrated into an overall marketing strategy. In Kenya Corp-orates like Safaricom, Ministry of Tourism,EABL and Sportpesa have utilized this tool and turned out to be successful.
